The JGR Class 1690 (originally the Ota Railway Class A1) was a 0-6-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1912 to 1937.

History

The Class 1690 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Ota Railway, with two locomotives built by the Pittsburgh Locomotive and Car Works in 1896 and delivered the same year. These were assigned the Class A1 and numbered 1 and 2. The locomotives were very similar to the Class A1 locomotives ordered by the Hankaku Railway, but were a foot shorter.

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were reclassified the Class 1690 and renumbered 1690 and 1691. The locomotives were then transferred to the Nanbu Railway with the locomotives renumbered back to 1 and 2. 2 was transferred to Takasaki Sanko and retired in 1955 while 1 was renumbered to C25 and moved to the Toya Railway and retired in 1956; a rumor says that the locomotive was then resold to Fuji Heavy Industries but this has not been confirmed. No Class 1690s have been preserved.
