The JGR Class 1480 (originally the Kansai Railway Class 88) was a 0-6-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1895 to 1963.

History

The Class 1480 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Nanwa Railway, with three locomotives manufactured by Dübs & Co. of Scotland and imported into Japan in 1895. These were numbered 1 to 3. An additional two locomotives were manufactured by Dübs in 1901; following on from the previous order the two locomotives were numbered 4 and 5. Ownership of the locomotives was transferred to the Kansai Railway in 1904 after it acquired the Nanwa Railway, with the locomotives reclassified as the Class 88, nicknamed Chihara and numbered 88 through 92.

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were renumbered the Class 1480. The locomotives were retired in 1919 on the JGR and all transferred to the Yawata Steel Works. The locomotives were then renumbered 303 through 307, then 301 through 305 in 1902. The locomotives were all retired from service on the Yawata Steel Works by 1963. No Class 1480s survive, however the locomotive did spawn the Class 1260 locomotives, manufactured by Nippon Sharyo with a design based on the Class 1480s.
