The JGR Class 1440 and the related Class 1400 (originally the Kyushu Railway Class 15) is a 0-6-0T Switcher-type side well tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1890 to 1964.

History

The Class 1440 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Kyushu Railway, with eight locomotives built by Krauss-Maffei. These were assigned as Class 15 locomotives and began service. The locomotives were later refined and improved, with Kyushu Railway ordering another twenty-one. Both were designated Class 15.

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were renumbered the Class 1440, while the improved locomotives were renumbered the Class 1400. The locomotives were retired by 1925 on the Kyushu Railway with all but one, 1413, sold to local railroads. These served these local railroads until 1964 when the last locomotives were retired and scrapped. Only one Class 1400 locomotive, 1412 (ex-Kyushu Railway 44), survives today, statically preserved at the head office of replica model manufacturer TomyTec in Tochigi. No Class 1440 locomotives have been preserved.
