The JGR Class 1430 (originally the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company Class N) was a 0-6-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotives operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1900 to 1963.

History

The Class 1430 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Kinbe Railway, with two locomotives built by Hannoversche Maschinenbau AG, better known as Hanomag, and delivered to Japan in 1900. However, due to the recession at the time, construction of the line was delayed, the license expired and the company was dissolved; as a result the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company took over ownership of the locomotives. Two other locomotives purchased by the Kinbe Railway were taken over by the Hankaku Railway to become their Class A6 locomotives. Another three locomotives, manufactured OEM by Henschel & Son in 1903, were delivered to the Hakatawan Railway; these were numbered 1 through 3. The locomotives featured an off-center smokebox door and an auxiliary well tank.

When the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company and Hakatawan Railway were acquired by the JGR in 1909, the Class N locomotives were reclassified as the Class 1430 locomotives and renumbered 1430 through 1434. The locomotives had a long service life performing mainly shunting until the last locomotives were retired in 1963. No Class 1430s have been preserved.
