The JGR Class 1285 (originally the Kokura Railway Class 3) was a 0-6-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1914 to 1955.

History

The Class 1285 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Kokura Railway, with three locomotives built by Henschel & Son in Germany. Three were later assigned the class 3 and numbered 3 through 5. Another three locomotives were manufactured for the Toyama Railway, also numbered 1 through 3.

When the Kokura Railway was nationalized in 1941, two of the three Class 3 locomotives, 3 and 5, were reclassified as the Class 1285 and numbered 1285 and 1286; 4 was not reclassified and was sold to the Kumanobu Railway. The three Tōyama Railway locomotives also changed hands a number of times before all the JGR and Tōyama Railway locomotives were retired by 1955. No Class 1285s survive, however the locomotive did spawn the Class 1225 locomotives, manufactured by Nippon Sharyo with a design based on the Class 1285s.
