The JGR Class 1275 (originally the Niigata Rinko Class A) is a 0-6-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1922 to March 1970.

History

The Class 1275 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was commissioned by the Niigata Rinko Railway, with four locomotives built by Orenstein & Koppel in Germany. Three were later assigned to the Niigata Rinko Railway, assigned the class A and numbered 1 through 3, while one was assigned to the Awa Railway, assigned the class 5 and numbered 8.

When the Niigata Rinko Railway was nationalized in 1941, the three class A locomotives were reclassified as the Class 1275. When the Awa Railway was nationalized in 1933, the locomotives were initially intended to be named the Class 1580, but as there was no formal policy for naming locomotives acquired by the JGR from private railroads, a special case was granted in this case; as a result, the locomotives were classified the Class A 5, with the "A" (read: "ah") being used to designate locomotives acquired from the Awa Railway. The locomotive was not used much in this form and was scrapped in 1937.

The JGR-affiliated locomotives had a long service life, being used well into the 1960s, only being retired in March 1970. The locomotives were then slowly scrapped from 1971, except 1275, which was purchased by the Ōigawa Railway that same year, and then underwent restoration to operating condition at Shin-Kanaya Works. 1275, along with locomotives 17 and 2109 were then used for excursion services around the line until 1275 was retired in 1989. Today, 1275 is the only member of its class preserved and is located at the Plaza Loco, near Shin-Kanaya Station on the Oigawa Railway.
