The JGR Class 1245 (originally the Shingu Railway Class 5) is a 0-6-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1922 to 1936.

History

The Class 1245 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Shingu Railway, with a single locomotive ordered from Orenstein & Koppel in 1922 and imported into Japan. The locomotive was classified as the Class 5 and numbered as such. Eleven more locomotives were ordered by various private railroads in Japan and delivered between 1922 and 1925.

After the Shingu Railway was nationalized in 1934, the locomotive was reclassified as the Class 1245 although it appears the locomotive was never actually renumbered. The other eleven locomotives in use on private railroads were also not renumbered. In their later lives, the locomotives were later used for industrial use on industrial railroads. The last locomotives on these private railroads were retired in 1969.

Three of the derivatives, Nippon Carbide 1 and 2 (ex-Kashima Sangu Railway 1 and 2) and Kawasaki Steel NUS2 (ex-Ibaraki Railway 3), are preserved, making this one of the most well-represented locomotive classes from the JGR era.
