JGR Class 1225

The JGR Class 1225 (originally the Hakuhō Railway Class 3) is a 0-6-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1920 to 1962.

History[]

The Class 1225 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Hakuhō Railway, with one locomotive constructed by Nippon Sharyo based on a Henschel & Son design. The locomotives was classified as the Class 3 and numbered 3 on the Hakuhō Railway. Between 1921 and 1927 a number of similar derivatives were produced, including one, Tobu Railway Class A3 No. 58, with a 0-6-2 wheel arrangement.

After the Hakuhō Railway was nationalized, the locomotive was reclassified as the Class 1225. The derivatives all fall under the same class but were not reclassified or renumbered. The last locomotive in service was retired in 1962. The original Class 1225 was scrapped in 1942, but one of the derivatives, Kantō Railway 5, is preserved. This is notable as the only locomotive of the entire class with an 0-6-2 wheel arrangement. The locomotive is currently preserved in front of Omocha-no-Machi Station on the Tobu Utsunomiya Line.
