JGR Class 1215

The JGR Class 1215 (and the related Class 1190, 1195 and 2090) are 0-6-0T Switcher-type side tank superheated steam locomotives operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1922 to 1970.

History[]

The Class 1215 is an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the JGR, of which fourteen locomotives were built by Orenstein & Koppel from 1922 to 1925 and assigned to various different railroads around Japan and were mainly used for freight services. Little is known about their service lives but the locomotives did change hands many times.

The last locomotives were retired by about 1970. One locomotive, 1190, has been preserved. Yūbetsu Railway 205 (later Kushiro Developmental Wharf 205) was preserved near a kindergarten for some time before being scrapped around 1985 despite there being bidding in an attempt to save the locomotive.
