JGR Class 1120

The JGR Class 1120 (originally the Nambu Railway Class 1) was a 0-6-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1923 to 1948.

History[]

The Class 1120 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Hokutan Railway and Kochi Railway, with five locomotives built by Kisha Seizō. The locomotives was assigned the Class 1 on both railroads; two went to the Hokutan Railway and numbered 1 and 2, while the remaining three went to Kochi and numbered 1 through 3. What would later be christened the Class 1120 was a single locomotive built for the Nambu Railway in 1926. Originally numbered 121, when the locomotive was reclassified it was given the number 1.

After the Nambu Railway was acquired in 1944 by the JGR, the locomotive was reclassified as the Class 1120 and renumbered as such; the remaining five locomotives did not receive new numbers or the new classification. The Class 1120 was retired from JGR service in 1948, while the other locomotives were all retired by 1968. No Class 1120s survive, although there is a full-scale replica of Hokutan Railroad 2 in Nishieki Park in Kyoto, the site of the former Fukuchiyamanishi Station of the Hokutan Railway.
