The JGR Class 1100 (and the related Class 1040, 1050, 1060, 1150 and 1270) are 0-6-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotives operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1886 to the 1960s.
History[]
The Class 1100 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the JGR, with one locomotive initially built by Nasmyth, Wilson and Company and delivered in 1886. The locomotives were assigned the class B4 and began service the same year. Additional locomotives were produced until 1899 by numerous other British locomotive builders.
After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were renumbered the Class 1100, with other classes receiving other classifications. The locomotives were moved around a number of private railroads a number of times until the last locomotive was retired around the 1960s and scrapped. Only one locomotive, 1052, in its guise as Denki Kagaku 1, survives today. It is nicknamed Chuetsu Benkei and is located at the Tonami Tulip Park in Tonami, Japan.
