The JGR Class 1070 is a 4-4-2T Atlantic-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1925 to the 1970s.

History

The Class 1070 was one of a number of tank locomotive conversions of existing tender locomotives undertaken by the JGR in their later years. 49 Class 6200 and 6270 locomotives were converted into Class 1070 locomotives by JGR's various plants, mainly in Ōmiya and Takatori. The locomotives were converted from 1925 to 1928 and renumbered from 1070 to 1118.

The trains were largely assigned to Tokyo, Sendai, Osaka and Nagoya. The trains were later moved around between various private railroads mainly as switching locomotives before they were retired in the 1970s. One Class 1070, 1080 (ex-6289), survives today. After it was retired on the JGR, the locomotive was purchased by Nittetsu Mining, where it was used until 1979; it was then stored privately in a shed near the Hazuru Mine. In 2008, JR West made an offer to purchase the locomotive; the purchase was completed in 2009. The locomotive was then sent to the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum (now the Kyoto Railway Museum), where it remains today on static display. 1080 is the only remaining example of any Class 6200 locomotive or its derivatives.
