The JGR Class 1055 (originally the Chōshū Railway Class B1) was a 0-6-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1924 to 1960.

History

The Class 1055 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Chōshū Railway, with one locomotive built by Nippon Sharyo The locomotive was assigned the Class B1 and numbered 4. The locomotive was designed to resemble an Orenstein & Koppel locomotive produced around that time. The locomotives entered service the same year and complemented the Class A1 locomotives. A similar locomotive was also manufactured for the Sasayama Railway in 1925.

After the Chōshū Railway was nationalized in 1925, the locomotive was reclassified as the Class 1055 and renumbered as such. The locomotives were retired from JGR service as early as 1925, with the locomotive sold to Yahata Steel Works; it was renumbered 112, then 233. The locomotive underwent a major rebuild in 1953 and essentially became a completely different locomotive altogether.

The derivative was used by the Sasayama Railway and numbered 2. When the Sasayama Railway closed, the locomotive was moved to Miyazaki Kōtsū, renumbered 6 and remained there until 1962. No Class 1055s have been preserved.
