The JGR Class 1020 (originally the Sanyo Railway Class 15) was a 0-6-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1898 to 1952.

History

The Class 1020 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Sanyo Railway, with two locomotives built by the Dickson Manufacturing Company. The locomotives were assigned the Class 15 and numbered 86 and 87. The locomotives entered service the same year.

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were reclassified as the Class 1020 and renumbered 1020 and 1021. The locomotives were retired from JGR service in August 1912 and subsequently sold to the Yoro Railway; they were then resold a number of times, but from this point little is known about their service lives. 1021 was rediscovered in 1952 by a railfan, but was scrapped afterwards. No Class 1020s have been preserved.

The Class 1020s are the only known locomotive ordered by the JGR from the Dickson Manufacturing Company; this was also one of the last Dickson locomotives as Dickson would be absorbed into the American Locomotive Company in 1901 and the plant closed in 1909.
