The JGR Class 1000 was a 4-4-2T Atlantic-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1924 to 1959.
History[]
The Class 1000 was one of a number of tank locomotive conversions of existing tender locomotives undertaken by the JGR in their later years. All 36 Class 6350 locomotives were converted into Class 1000 locomotives by JGR's various plants, mainly in Ōmiya and Hamamatsu. The locomotives were converted from 1924 to 1926 and renumbered to 1000 to 1035.
The trains were largely assigned to Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. The trains were later moved around between various private railroads mainly as shunting locomotives before they were retired by 1959. No Class 1000s have been preserved. The earlier Class 1000 locomotives are not related to this locomotive.
