The JGR Class 10 (originally the Kyushu Railway Class 4) and the related Class 30 are 0-4-0ST Switcher-type well tank steam locomotives operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1889 to 1964.

History[]

The Class 10 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Kyushu Railway, Kawagoe Railway, Ryomo Railway and Kobu Railway, with twenty-five locomotives built by Krauss at their Marsfeld and Linz factories, better known as Krauss, from 1889 to 1895. The locomotives were assigned various numbers on these railroads, with the bulk of the 25 locomotives going to the Kyushu Railway.

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were reclassified as the Class 10 and renumbered 10 and 26. Some of the locomotives were renumbered further as they were reclassified into the Class 30, largely identical to the Class 10 apart from slightly larger drivers. The locomotives were retired on the JGR by 1925, with many sold to private railways. Many of these locomotives would serve for a long time, with many retiring in the 1960s.

Four locomotives have been preserved, making this one of the most well-represented of Japan's earliest steam locomotives: 15, 17, 26 and Bōseki Railway 2 (ex-Kawagoe Railway 2). All locomotives are statically preserved, although 17 had a brief excursion career on the Ōigawa Railway in the early 1970s.
