1429 is a 2-8-0 steam locomotive that was built originally as 547 for the War Department during World War 2 in 1942. The Army used them in Iraq as British troops were protecting the then Persian oilfields from Nazi attack. 1429 and its class were adapted to their location by being oil fired, right hand drive, with air brakes and often with a second cab roof to reduce cab temperatures. While its class were scrapped it was abandoned and is the only one left of its class. There were plans to get 1429 back to the UK but that was abandoned When the Gulf War happend. It was last heard of in 2014, when plans were being developed to cosmetically restore it in Bagdad.
