History:[]
Hunslet Engine Works No. 1589 Newstead was constructed in 1929 and was delivered to the Woolly Colliery at Darton, West Yorkshire. It had worked in that colliery until 1970, when Newstead was withdrawn from active service in 1970.
People had assumed that it was scrapped, but that fact was never actually documented, when Newstead was bought by Malcolm Saul in 1972. Newstead was later hidden in an unallocated shed with no rails connecting to the shed, it remained lost in that shed until it was found by a salvage group. It was then cosmetically restored to its original form and was removed from the location it was found at, and towed away by truck to the Nene Valley Railway, where it was properly restored back to operating condition.
