The Hunslet 16" Saddle Tank Engine was a class of 0-6-0ST (Saddle-Tank Engine) type steam locomotives that were built by the Hunslet Engine Company between 1923- 1958.

History[]

The first Hunslet 16" Saddle Tank Engine was built by the Hunslet Engine Company in 1923 with some being produced during the Second World War until the last one had rolled out of the works in 1958. A total of 44 examples were constructed, the latter of which, four examples were exported to Peru and one example was exported to Australia, with the rest remaining in the United Kingdom.

Regarding Technical Specifications, the Hunslet meant that it was made by the Hunslet Engine Company and 16" meant that it had 16-inch cylinders on the inside.

The Hunslet 16" Saddle Tank Engines could be seen operating by industrial companies, some of them being very small and not by massive railway companies, these Saddle-Tank engines had to be very versatile, they had to be easy to maintain, they had to be durable and be capable of working in extremally poor conditions where the trackwork and maintenance could leave much to be desired.

Withdrawal of the engines from active service occurred over time. Many examples have survived into preservation as either static displays while others are in operational condition.
