The Hankyu 8000 series is a city commuter electric multiple unit operated by Hankyu Corporation since January 1989.

Description[]

The 8000 series trains were introduced in January 1989 as Hankyu's new flagship train and their most technologically-advanced train at the time. These were intended to replace the 7000 series cars. A counterpart known as the 8300 series operates on the Kyoto Main Line, introduced around a similar time, while a second counterpart, the 8200 series, operates with the 8000 series sets to supplement them but only during rush hours.

Design[]

The 8000 series sets feature a simple, squared off design. The cars feature dual top-mounted headlights and dual rectangular express marker light units below the windows, typical of Hankyu trains. The design of the trains was apparently based on that of the WMATA 1000 series and the Seoul Metro 3000 series.

Specifications[]

Construction of the cars is of steel. The cars use Toshiba GTO variable frequency drives which produced a distinctive wail; some sets produced a louder wail. These were the first trains on the Hankyu network with a variable frequency drive which was mass-produced after tests with the 2200 series cars. Set 8001 is equipped with a Toshiba IGBT drive in conjunction with PMSM motors which produces a soft hissing noise; in the past the set was equipped with a different type of IGBT drive.
