The HC35 series is a Japanese commuter hybrid diesel multiple unit planned to be operated by the Central Japan Railway Company from 2028 onwards.

History

The HC35 series sets were introduced to replace the KiHa 75 series sets, in operation since 1993. They are intended to be used on the rapid Mie service as well as the Takayama Main Line and Taita Line. Construction is expected to commence in 2026; nineteen two-car sets are expected to be produced. The sets will enter service in 2028.

Design

The HC35 series sets sport a "soft, rounded shape" on their front ends; the cars feature a rising orange stripe on the fronts, with the orange intended to give commuters "a sense of familiarity" and give the Mie service "a sense of speed". The sets' design language is directly taken from that of the 315 series sets.

Specifications

The HC35 series sets are expected use technologies adopted in the previous HC85 series sets. Two seating configurations will be made available.
