The Railroad Museum of Long Island Greenport is the smaller of two railroad museum facilities on Long Island. It is located at 440 4th St, Greenport, NY. The other location is in Riverhead.
Greenport Location[]
The Greenport facility only has three pieces of rolling stock and no locomotives. It does have a turntable that is non-operational as well as a pair of 19-century fox wheel trucks. The museum itself is a century-old Long Island Railroad Freight Station, previously used to load cargo onto LIRR Freight Trains. Today, the station houses a wide variety of displays, including a HO-Gauge model railroad that shows Greenport in the 1950s and silverware from old-fashioned LIRR passenger trains.
Turntable[]
The turntable is air-powered and was installed in the 1890s. It was used all the way through the age of steam before being deemed obsolete. After being donated to the Railroad Museum of Long Island, it fell into a state of disrepair. There are plans to restore it to operation, but as of 2024, those plans have not yet come to fruition.
