The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is a freight and heritage railroad that operates between Bryson City and Dillsboro, NC. It currently operates both steam-powered and diesel-powered locomotives for their tourist excursion trains and was founded in 1988. As of December 1999, the railroad is currently owned and operated by American Heritage Railways, Inc., which also owns and operates the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNG), operating between Durango and Silverton, CO.
