Great Northern No. 2584 is a class S-2 4-8-4 "Northern" Type steam locomotive it was built in March 1930 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. The Locomotive was delivered to the railroad by April of that year and was the tenth of fourteen S-2s built overall. It was painted in the Glacier Park Green (Glacier Green) and like all the class is Oil-fired. For years it hauled the Empire Builder, Oriental Limited and the Fast Mail trains until the late 1940s when diesels replaced it in passenger service, putting it in secondary passenger and freight service. Its tender had a hot box on August 9, 1945 and 2588 slammed into the rear of 2584's train in Michigan City, ND, both pulling the Empire Builder. The mishaps were resolved, and both went back to service. After 1947 the locomotive recieved Timken bearings on its driver axles and was repainted black. In late 1956, it made its final run and was put in a roundhouse in Superior, WI. In December 1957, it was retired and on March 21, 1958, the Great Northern had decided to hold it historical purposes and on May 15, 1964, it was put on display at the Havre depot in Havre, Montana.
