Wasp was built in 1973 by the Clayton Equipment Co. as builders number B0152 for a mine in Cornwall where it operated for a while. In 2009 it was rebuilt by Alan Keef Ltd. and operates of the Great Laxey Mine Railway where it was given the name Wasp.

The name it was given is a reference to the fact that all the other locomotives (Ant & Bee) are also named after insects.
