The Georgia State Railroad Museum (formerly known as the Roundhouse Railroad Museum) is a railway museum located in Savannah, Georgia at a historic Central of Georgia Railway site.
History[]
The site that would eventually become the museum grounds originally started off as the Central of Georgia Railways heavy shops and terminal facilities for their locomotives and rolling stock. After the Southern Railway had acquired and absorbed the Central of Georgia in 1963, ownership of the facilities was transferred over to the City of Savannah, Georgia.
The site was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976 and by 1989 was developed into a railroad museum. Together with the adjacent former train station and shed, the entire area is now designated as a Historic Landmark District.
The museum site includes a partial roundhouse with an operating 85' turntable, a partial machine shop, tender frame shop, blacksmith shop, boiler house, storehouse and print shop, lumber and planning sheds, coach and paint shops, and a partial carpentry shop which now houses the Savannah Children's Museum.
The museum maintains a collection of former Central of Georgia locomotives and rolling stock, as well as equipment from other railroads with ties to the state of Georgia. It also houses operational steam and diesel motive power which are used to carry visitors on a short rides across the grounds.
