GWR No. 1340 or Trojan is an 0-4-0ST steam locomotive, built in August 5, 1897 by the Avonside Engine Company of Bristol, England.

History[]

1340 Trojan was built by the Avonside Engine Company of Bristol in August 5, 1897 (Works No. 1386) for Messrs Dunn & Shute of Newport Town Dock for use as a shunter at their dock originally in a plain black livery. In 1903 she was purchased by the Alexandra Docks Railway remaining unnumbered. Later he absorbed into the Great Western Railway in 1923 were she received the number 1340 while working on GWR territory. He was withdrawn from Cardiff by the GWR in July 1932 and was sold to the Netherseal colliery at Burton-on-Trent, who then passed her onto to Alders (Tamworth) ltd in 1947.

Later in April 1968 he was sold to Didcot Railway Centre were she was restored and put into service.

Preservation[]

Trojan is now preserved at the Didcot Railway Centre. It was restored to working order in 2002 and remained in service on demonstration trains at Didcot until 2011 when it was withdrawn for a ten-yearly overhaul. The locomotive returned back to service in early 2021.

  • The Thomas fandom have claimed Percy the small engine is based off this engine, but he doesn't have an actual basis so this is the best we've got.
