The Great Western Railway (GWR) 7400 Class was a class of mixed-traffic 0-6-0 pannier tank steam locomotive introduced by Charles Collett in 1936.
They were similar in design to the previous GWR 6400 Class but were constructed without the equipment needed to work with autotrains. They also had a higher boiler pressure of 180 psi which provided a small but useful increase in power.
Construction and Numbering[]
A total of 50 locomotives in the 7400 Class were built, numbered 7400-7449. 30 were constructed by Swindon Works between 1936-1937. Two more batches of ten locomotives each were added to by British Railways in 1948 and 1950. These locomotives were destined for a short working life, the briefest being only nine years.
