GWR 6400 Class No. 6435

The Great Western Railway (GWR) No. 6435 is a 6400 Class 0-6-0PT pannier tank engine built for the Great Western Railway.

History[]

No. 6435 was built at Swindon works in 1937 and by the time it was withdrawn in October 1964. No. 6435 had run over 570,000 miles in service.

It was purchased by the Dart Valley Railway, the then operators of today’s South Devon Railway, and arrived at Buckfastleigh in October 1965, straight from BR service.

No. 6435 was used regularly in the line’s early days of preservation and, in the 1970s, was transferred to the Dart Valley Company’s Paignton to Kingswear line.

In 2008, No. 6435 was declared too small for this heavily graded line and was purchased for use on the Bodmin and Wenford Railway in Cornwall where it returned to operations following an overhaul in 2012.

Trivia[]

No. 6435 is one of three surviving examples of the 6400 Class in preservation.
It was briefly named Ajax during the early and mid-2000s.
It was the last member of its class to be withdrawn from service.
