The Great Western Railway (GWR) No. 6430 is one of three 6400 Class 0-6-0PT Pannier Tank engines currently in preservation.
History[]
Built at GWR's own Swindon Works in March 1937, she served the railway for nearly 30 years before her withdrawal by British Railways (BR) in October 1964.
Originally sold to John Cashmore Ltd. as scrap, she was immediately re-sold to the Dart Valley Railway, being towed by her sister, No. 6412, in 1966.
For another 20 years, she was used for spare parts, until being purchased by her current owner, Hugh Skipton, in 1990. Shortly thereafter, her restoration began at Long Marston, before being moved again to the Llangollen Railway in 1996, slowly but steadily progressing till making her first successful test run in early 2004.
No. 6430 currently remains in operation on the South Devon Railway , decked in an original BR Lined Green livery. Her boiler ticket is due to expire in 2025.
