No. 5119 is a GWR 5101 Class or 'Large Prairie' 2-6-2T steam locomotive built for the Great Western Railway (GWR). They were medium-sized tank engines used for suburban and local passenger services all over the Great Western Railway system.
History[]
No. 5119 was built in November 1934 at Swindon Works and spent most of its service career on GWR's Birmingham suburban lines, working local passenger trains. It was retired in 1963 when steam services were taken over by railcars and was sold for scrap to Woodham Brothers scrapyard at Barry.
It remained at the Barry Scrapyard for 22 years before being moved to the Gloucester Warwickshire Railway at Toddington in 1985 where restoration was originally started, but it was moved to Long Marston MoD and later the Llangollen Railway in 1988 for the completion of its overhaul.
No. 5119 finally returned to steam in 2003 and became a regular performer at Llangollen. In November 2014, it was temporarily taken out of service for an overhaul. In December 2020 an agreement was reached between the owners of the locomotive and the West Somerset Railway which resulted in the locomotive being on loan to the West Somerset Railway throughout the 2021 operating season up until the end of December 2022.
No. 5199's boiler ticket is set to expire in 2024.
