No. 2861 was a class 2800 2-8-0 steam locomotive that was built for the Great Western Railway by Swindon in 1918. No. 2861 and its siblings were built to do heavy freight work.
It was withdrawn in 1963 and was sent to the Woodham Brothers Scrapyard in Barry for scrap. It was one of the last ten remaining locomotives in the scrapyard becoming one of the Barry Ten. Eventually the final ten were all finally removed from the scrapyard in the 2010s. No. 2861 was the last locomotive to leave Barry when it departed in May 2013.
Due to its rather poor condition, No. 2861 was cut up at the Llangollen Railway in 2014 and is currently being used as a spare parts donor for other locomotives and for the construction of various new build projects.
The frames of the locomotive have been scrapped but the cylinder and saddle block, along with several other components, are being used in the construction of the next GWR 4700 Class 2-8-0 No. 4709.
