The GE U36 is a 3600 hp diesel-electric locomotive model built by General Electric Transportation Systems. These were the largest and most powerful of the conventional GE U-boats, and were meant to be a direct rival with EMD's SD45 and F45 diesel locomotives, and American Locomotive Work's C636. A total of 218 units were built between 1971 and 1975. Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México owned the largest roster over all, with 104 units, with Santa Fe coming in second place with 100 units.

The Santa Fe had many of their U36Cs rebuilt into SF30Cs in the mid 1980s. A single SF30C survives, #9501, and it has been preserved by the Arizona State Railroad Museum.
