No.490 is a 2-4-0 tender steam locomotive.
History[]
No.490 was built in January 1895 at Stratford Works for the Great Eastern Railway as part of their T26 class as designed by James Holden in 1891 to a similar design as the T19. It continued in service until 1923 when the London North Eastern Railway took over the Great Eastern Railway.[1][2][3][4][5]
Where it was renumbered three times before passing into British Railways ownership as number 2785 (renumbered 62785 by BR). Finally in December 1959 it was withdrawn from service as the last 2-4-0 ever to operate on British Railways. It was donated to the National Railway Museum of the UK in York. It has been on display at Bressingham ever since.[1][2][3][4][5]
Trivia[]
- No.490 is often forgotten as being preserved.
- The toy company Matchbox has produced a model of No.490 on a flatbed truck for the Models of Yesteryear series. It is unknown if a tender exists for the model or not, though it likely doesn't.
