No. 8572 is a preserved 4-6-0 tender steam locomotive.
History[]
No. 8572 was built in 1928 by Beyer, Peacock and company as builder's number 61572 for the London North Eastern Railway to the Great Eastern Railway's S69 class design known as the B12 class to the LNER. During it's later British Rail life it became a minor celebrity while pulling BR excursion services. It was withdrawn in 1961 and later purchased by the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway Society.[1][2][3][4][5]
It was eventually sent to Germany for restoration but due to complications due to changes of ownership of the Workshops, funding disputes and the reunification of East and West Germany No.8572 almost ended up dumped in the North Sea! But through careful negotiations carried out by the M&GNJRS to the firm who now owned the works the locomotive was restored and arrived in the UK in 1994 returning to steam the next year. In 1999 it was repainted back into BR black and in 2007 it was withdrawn from service due to the boiler ticket expiring.[1][2][3][4][5]
It returned to steam in 2012 until 2020 when it once again required an overhaul. The M&GNJRS who still own the locomotive have prioritized it's overhaul so it can return to steam in 2028 in time for it's 100th anniversary of existence.[3][4][5]
