History[]
The GER 552 Class was a class of 10 examples built in 1882 by Kitson and Company. They were a class of 0-6-0 Tender Engines, built for the Great Eastern Railway.
The 552 Class was in-fact, the most unusual 0-6-0 Tender Engines ever, having their footplating raised entirely clear of the wheels, Leaving the driving wheels exposed for everyone to see. Bromley was replaced as Locomotive Superintendent by T.W. Worsdell at the same time as these 10 engines were being built, and Worsdell produced his own 0-6-0 design (The Y14 class/J15 class), which had smaller driving wheels, giving a higher tractive effort, and larger boilers. Later – under James Holden – the ‘No. 552 Class’ were given larger cylinders and new boilers. By this time, they were mostly relegated to ballast train duties.
Although the Class was constructed in 1882, they were later on rebuilt in 1893, although this process resulted in very few external changes, it's believed that they had new boilers and they had new cylinders. Withdrawal of the class had occurred between 1904 and 1906, none of them had survived into LNER days nor the days of British Railways and every single one of them wound up being scrapped, rendering them extinct.
