The Fugan Railway Class RoKo 2 was a Japanese DC electric locomotive operated by the Fugan Railway and later other railway companies from 1940 to 1980.

History

The Class RoKo 2 is an early electric locomotive used in Japan. Operated by the Fugan Railway, the preceding operator of what is now the Toyama Chihō Railway's Toyamakō Line, one locomotive was manufactured by Nippon Tetsudō Jidōsha Kōgyō (now Tōyō Kōki) in 1940. It was one of a number of small electric locomotives manufactured by the company. The locomotive's alleged past history is hazy, with sources claiming the locomotive was manufactured in 1923 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works with Westinghouse electrical equipment, although its appearance gives no indication that the locomotive was manufactured by Westinghouse.

Originally used by the Fugan Railway, the railway was merged with the Toyama Electric Railway in 1941; this railway was in turn nationalized in 1943 through wartime acquisitions by the Japanese National Railways. Initially the locomotive was operated with no change in number but reclassified as the Class ED26 and renumbered ED26 1 in 1952. In its later career on the Toyamakō Line, the locomotive operated with the similar DeKi 11 (later ED25 1).

ED26 1 was removed from service on the Toyamakō Line in 1961 as new locomotives were introduced; it was transferred to Echigo Kōtsū and operated on their Nagaoka Line until 1980 when it was withdrawn and scrapped.

Specifications

The Class RoKo 2 used a nose suspension drive system. TDK-31C traction motors were used on the locomotives.
