Built by ALCo, 148 worked on the Florida East Coast until 1938, when a road bed was destroyed in a hurricane. This incident occurred during the Miami-Key West run.

It was an excursion locomotive in the 1970s and saw service in New Jersey before moving on to successive owners in Connecticut, Michigan, and Colorado.

On June 3, 2020, 148 had been (newly) restored by US Sugar and is re-lettered to the US Sugar livery to operate as a tourist attraction; it is also now back to working order to haul sugar cane around for industrial purposes.
