The Erie Railroad's H-1 class were a multiple-batch Fleet of early 2-8-0 Consolidations that were the First engines of their Type to run on the Erie Railroad beginning after 1875.

Origins and Beginnings[]

531

New York, Lake Erie & Western Ry. #531 in service near New York, c. 1880's.

In the Summer of 1866, the Baldwin Locomotive Works erected the world's first Consolidation Engine the 2-8-0 making its Debut on the most recent consolidation of several smaller Railroads forming the Independent Lehigh Valley Railroad. The first engine was a Moderate success as it wasn't until the 1870's when Railroads started buying engines of this type. The real Advantage of the 2-8-0 design was that it could pull the same as two 4-4-0 American's but with less Fuel and Maintenance Costs. America's Railroads were Originally blind to see that at first as most, like the Famous Ross Winans himself didn't believe in the Major use of a leading truck while working on engines for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. By 1870's, the Pennsylvania Railroad, Baltimore and Ohio, and Denver & Rio Grande Ry. became amongst the First Railroad companies in the Country to adopt this type into regular Revenue service. As the New York, Lake Erie & Western Railway of Erie, PA was looking for more powerful Locomotives to replace older engines such as Moguls and Americans, the railroad at the Time operated with the Tioga Ry. as the lines were amongst the Largest in the East in New York. In August 1876, the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia USA delivered the first True Consolidation aboard the NYLE&W's Lines and proved the Company it's success on Heavy Freights. In Late 1877 the NYLE&W had the Cooke Locomotive Works build they're first Example as the New York, Lake Erie and Western #500, with a tall Diamond stack, Russian Iron Boiler with Brass Bands, decorative paints with a Wooden cab and Coal Tender proved to be the new face of Motive Power on the home road. This was designated as the X Class Locomotive and to build more of their design, many were built by 1886 as the Railroad highly trusted it's Susquehanna, PA. Shops to build a large quantity. Eventually becoming the Erie Railway Lines in 1895, the Erie was another one of the first Railroad companies to gain many engines of this type for benefiting the heavier demands of the late 19th Century as the Pennsylvania Railroad developed the R Class (Later the H3 Class) as being the largest produced class of 2-8-0's in the 19th Century at about over eight hundred units. As the Railroad adopted the X Class as the premier freight Hauler in 1877, To Cut costs within the Troubles of Bankruptcies in the late 1870's with the Then-current Broad Gauge of 6ft, the Railroad converted some of the X Class engines to Standard Gauge and all the main lines to the standard 4ft 8 1/2 inches between the Rails as the Project was completed on June 22nd, 1880. By this decade, the Railroads of the eventual Erie Lines were so desperately ambitious that they altogether acquired around one hundred and forty-eight units between 1876-1889. With the Baldwin Locomotive Works (Two units), Danforth Locomotive and Machinery Company (Eleven units), Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works (Twenty units), Cooke Locomotive Works (Three units), Erie's Susquehanna Shops (Fifty-seven units), Grant Locomotive Works (Forty-two units), Rhode Island Works (Nine units) and the Brooks Works (Four units). Notably, not all engines remained the same as Traditional Rear-cabbed engines as some sometime in the 1890's were rebuilt as Center-cabbed Camelback's with widened Wooten Fireboxes. All Fireboxes stretched through the cab where an Outdoor Back head was placed, this larger Radial Stay design was more efficient Steaming than the Common "Altoona" Sloping Fireboxes on Early PRR I series engines.

Service Lives and the Dawn of the New Century[]

When put into service, these Locomotives all had the same design of U-shape Tenders carrying 3,600 Gallons of Water and 7 Tons of Coal although many were updated later with Larger capacities. Indeed, built with the well-known Wagon top Boiler design, Pressures differed between Locomotives that it's difficult to determine which ones had these Treatments. Were all built with 20" x 24" cylinders with 110 Lbs. PSI. of Boiler Pressure creating 18,000 Lbs. of Tractive Effort. However, many were updated with 125 Lbs. of Pressure outputting 20,400 Lbs. of TE. Built with very Small 50" Drivers, they were regulated to heavy slow Freight Service in New York, New jersey and Pennsylvania. Put into service on three Railroads in the Region, the New York, Lake Erie and Western, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio, and Tioga Railway would eventually Create the Erie Lines in 1895 where all Locomotives were renumbered into the Erie Railway's System along with other classes of H class Engines. During the 1890s as it was common on a chunk variety of Erie Locomotives, several of the H-1's (Former X Class) were Rebuilt by the Erie into Double-Cabbed Camelbacks with they're Fireboxes majorly Rebuilt wider of the Wooten Firebox to burn the Anthracite Coal more Efficiently which was Common at the Time, although it is unknown how many received this Upgrade. Many renumbering's were present as late as 1899 when making room for more new Locomotives. By 1900 as the H-1s were surplus and were already outsized by newer and heavier Consolidations, twenty-five were converted between 1899-1902 to new B-3 class 0-6-0 Steam Switchers by removing the last Drive Axle, the Lead Truck, shortening the Pilot frame, replacing the Cowcatchers with Footboard Pilots, and some substituted they're older rectangle Tenders with Slope backs. Only one unit was converted back to a 2-8-0 after a year for unknown reasons. The Erie Railway's unusual conversions of Veteran Freighters to Switchers weren't the only such things to take Action, as the Pennsylvania Railroad and Great Northern Railway did some with theirs. About half the Class was Scrapped by December 1911 as several were sold to other Railroads who desperately needed Good Engines. Some of the rebuilt H-1's as B-3's were scrapped after several Years of service by newer Power as simply One can't Win.

The Great War and Overall Fate[]

As late as the Outbreak of World War I occurred, a handful of the H-1's and converted B-3's survived in regular Switching and Branchline Chores. Not too many were scrapped during the War Years as the Erie needed to have as many locomotives in use as Possible after April 1917 when the U.S. officially entered the Great War. Many were still Camelbacks and Rear Cab's with the same Tender designs. Useful on light secondary Freight Roles, the H-1's still continued to linger on as one of the oldest locomotives still operating on the Erie Railroad. Operating with several hundred identical locomotives off a few major railroads, By the end of World War I on November 11th, 1918, there was still around twenty-four remaining units on the Roster as long before the era they were "Veterans" as only one B-3 was still active. With several gone by the early 1920's, there was a total of over more than eight hundred and sixty 2-8-0 Consolidations present on the Erie Railroad's Roster during February 1921. Only very few of the H-1 class received electrical Lighting Lines converted out of their older Box-style headlamps as several were sold to other Railroads. The Final H-1 members on the Railroad were scrapped in the late Autumn of 1927 along with all other Most remaining Camelback's putting in more than forty years of Service surpassing the average Lifespan of a Locomotive in General. None were Preserved as the Class was rendered extinct completely by 1930.

Stock List[]

Originally built as the Class X, they were all Delivered to the New York, Lake Erie & Western Ry. and Subsidiary New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio Ry. Both Lines were liquidated as Erie Lines in 1895. All Locomotives are built as Rear Cab unless noted.
