Locomotive Wiki

Erie Lackawanna No. 3607 is an EMD SD45 heavy freight diesel locomotive built by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors in 1967.

It is powered by a 645E3 V-20 turbo-charged diesel engine. This model has 20 cylinders and is the first V-20 engine ever made which was the largest ever used on a locomotive at the time. There were two major design problems with this type locomotive. The first was making a very long crankshaft tough enough to take the torque it would endure when in service and the second was determining the firing sequence for the 20 cylinders. The engine is 65 feet 8 inches long, weighs about 391,000 pounds, and has a 4,000 gallon capacity fuel tank.

No. 3607 served on the Erie Lackawanna Railway hauling freight trains until the company went bankrupt in 1976 and became one of the many assets that was absorbed into the Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail). In 1986 Conrail donated the locomotive to the Museum of Transportation in Kirkwood, MO where it has been on static display ever since.
