The Eidan 2000 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Teito Rapid Transit Authority (Eidan) from February 1960 to July 1993.
History[]
The 2000 series was a completely new design that was conceived in 1959 as a new train that could be used as the standard train on the TRTA Ginza Line. Manufacturing commenced in 1960, with the cars being manufactured by seven different manufacturers; the cars' numbering started from 2029, following on from the two 1900 series cars being numbered 1927 and 1928. All cars were equipped with overhead luggage racks and seat stanchions, a first for the Ginza Line, with the interior having green decorative panels and brown seat moquette.
The first two cars were completed by Tokyu Car Corporation and entered service on 24 February 1960; manufacturing would continue until October 1963. Acting as the main workhorse of the Teito Rapid Transit Authority, the 2000 series cars would be used to replace over 60 railcars used on the Ginza Line starting from its earliest days and would quickly become a common sight on the Ginza Line. Five two-car sets would be transferred for use on the Marunouchi Line's Hōnanchō Branch Line to replace the ten 100 series cars in use there; due to a shortage of cars on that line they were often operated in conjunction with 500 series sets or other train types.
When they first entered service, the sets were mainly formed into six-car formations, using two 2000 series cab cars, two 1500N series and two older rolling stock like the 1200 series or similar as intermediate cars; there were trains formed fully of 2000 series cars but these were uncommon at the time. With the Hōnanchō Branch Line being converted to solely 3-car sets, eight additional 2000 series cars were transferred over to that line, with the sets reformed into six three-car sets.
Car number stickers were added to the cars in 1983 with the introduction of the 01 series sets. With further additions of 01 series sets, withdrawals commenced in 1986, with the 1800 series cars inserted into the sets removed and withdrawn. 17 sets remained in service with the completion of delivery of all first batch 01 series sets by April 1988; this number was further reduced to four sets, 2061, 2063, 2071 and 2095, by the beginning of 1993. The addition of 02 series trains led to the withdrawal of the 2000 series on the Hōnanchō Branch Line on 6 July 1993, with future services run using three-car 500 series sets. A special final run service was conducted on 24 July 1993 using 2061, while the last service of a 2000 series set was conducted on 30 July 1993.
Following their withdrawals on the TRTA network some cars were refurbished by Keio Juuki Seibi and resold to the Hitachi Electric Railway and Chōshi Electric Railway; the Hitachi Electric Railway took delivery of 24 cars, naming them the 2000 and 3000 series and operated them until March 2005 with the closure of the line, while the Chōshi Electric Railway took delivery of two cars, naming them the 1000 series and operating them until February 2016. Both cars operated by the Chōshi Electric Railway have been preserved.
Design[]
The 2000 series design was based on previous cars operated by Eidan on the Ginza Line and related lines.
Initially using single incandescent headlights, these were changed to a shield beam around 1965 and to dual shield beams around 1986.
Specifications[]
Construction is of steel. The trains use Mitsubishi-manufactured underbody electronics and control systems.
