The Eidan 1700 series was a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Teito Rapid Transit Authority (a predecessor company to what is now Tokyo Metro) from September 1956 to September 1986.
History[]
The 1700 series sets were conceived to account for a projected increase in service demand. A total of 15 cars were produced in September 1956, with five different manufacturers building the cars. The cars entered service in September 1956; their numbering started from 1701, as the last 1600 series car was numbered 1689 and it was necessary to restart the numbering.
With TRTA standardizing rolling stock to use 2000 and 1500N series cars in fixed six-car formations, existing early rolling stock such as the 1000 and 100 series were withdrawn from service while others, such as the 1200, 1300 and 1400 series cars, were converted into intermediate cars by removing their cabs and associated electrical equipment. These modifications were also done on the 1700 series and similar rolling stock that followed although their cab equipment was not removed.
The intermediate car conversions were completed on this series in 1969 and were used as such from then on; their appearance, compared to other cars in a consist, stood out due to their construction methods. Some cars were later modified to have four motors, using motors from scrapped 1200 and 1300 series cars. Withdrawals commenced in 1984 with the introduction of the 01 series sets and all were withdrawn by 1986.
No 1700 series cars have been preserved.
Specifications[]
The 1700 series' basic design follows that of previous rolling stock operated by the TRTA; they were largely similar to the 1956 batch of 1600 series cars, featuring single leaf doors but some minor detail differences compared to the 1600 series.
