The Eidan 1500 series was a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Teito Rapid Transit Authority (a predecessor company to what is now Tokyo Metro) from December 1954 to October 1986.

History[]

The 1500 series sets were conceived to account for a projected increase in service demand. Three cars were produced in August 1954 by Tokyu Car Corporation and Kinki Sharyo. The cars entered service in December 1954; their numbering started from 1572, following on from the last 1400 series car being numbered 1471.

With TRTA standardizing rolling stock to use 2000 and 1500N series cars (no relation to this series apart from similar designations) in fixed six-car formations, existing early rolling stock such as the 1000 and 100 series were withdrawn from service while others, such as the 1200, 1300 and 1400 series cars were converted into intermediate cars by removing their cabs and associated electrical equipment. These modifications were also done on the 1500 series and similar rolling stock that followed although their cab equipment was not removed.

The intermediate car conversions were completed on this series in 1969 and were used as such from then on; their appearance, compared to other cars in a consist, stood out due to their construction methods. Withdrawals commenced in 1985 with the introduction of the 01 series sets and all were withdrawn by 1986; the last car in service, 1572, was withdrawn from service alongside 1244 on 9 October 1986, one of the longest serving railcars in TRTA service with a service life of over 50 years.

No 1500 series cars have been preserved.

Specifications[]

The 1500 series' basic design follows that of previous rolling stock operated by the TRTA. Its body structure design was based on that of the 500 series sets in operation on the Marunouchi Line, with enlarged windows and directional signs lifted directly from the 500 series.

These were the first Ginza Line trains to be painted in orange, with future trains being painted in this color until the 01 series. It can be said that the 1500 series' design acted as the basis for all future rolling stock operated on the Ginza Line.
