The EV-E801 series, branded ACCUM, is a Japanese battery electric multiple unit operated by the East Japan Railway Company since March 2017.
History[]
Based on test results from 817 series set VG114 that was converted into a battery electric multiple unit, the EV-E801 series was produced to replace the older KiHa 40 series cars that had operated on the Oga Line for quite some time. The first (and only) set, G1, was announced by JR East on 20 November 2015, delivered from Hitachi's Yamaguchi Factory on December 2016 and entered service on 3 March 2017 on the Oga Line.
The set is in service and is based at Akita Depot. The set runs on the Ōu Main Line and the Oga Line (branded the Oga Namahage Line), with operations of the set based in the latter. The set runs on the Ōu Main Line under overhead power; however, the Oga Line is non-electrified, so it runs on battery power on said line. Five more sets were built in 2020.
Design[]
The sets are based on 817 series set VG114, experimentally converted to use battery power. The set has aluminum bodies painted in either red or blue. The ACCUM logo is prominently seen on the sides of the cars, with a white ACCUM and Energy Accumulating Vehicle subtitle on the sides. A small white ACCUM logo is also seen splashed on the front. The sides of the cars also have a depiction of a namahage demon, a demon in Akita folklore.
Specifications[]
Construction is of a double-skinned aluminum alloy based on the Hitachi A-Train concept. Each car is 20 meters long, 2.95 meters wide and 3.68 meters high. Traction motors are insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drives manufactured by Hitachi which produce a loud hissing sound.
As mentioned above, the EV-E801 series set is a battery electric multiple unit and features underbody 360 kWh storage batteries in the EV-E800 car which allows it to run on the non-electrified Oga Line. The onboard batteries can be charged via two methods; through the train's regenerative brakes which route some of the power from braking to charge the batteries, or through overhead lines. The sets normally undergo charging at a small purpose-built charging facility at Oga Station on the Oga Line, being charged via its specialized single-arm pantographs.
The set's air-conditioning systems and interior lighting are powered by electricity from the overhead wires.
