The EMD SW1001 is a 1,000-horsepower (750 kW) diesel switcher locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between September 1968 and June 1986. 230 in total were produced, mainly for the railways of North America.
The SW1001 was created because the SW1000 proved to be unsatisfactory because of its larger height with a flatter roof. The SW1001 had the same powertrain and the same hood as the SW1000 but had the underframe of a SW1200 despite having a slightly different engine, that being the EMD 645 series diesel engine. The engine was mounted on risers for better clearance, raising the height of the hood about 6 inches above the walkway compared to the SW1000, and needing a spacer under the hood. The cab was close to the SW1200 but not the same, being longer with a different window arrangement.
