The EMD F7s are 4f708\1m435\Standard Gauge 4Axle\BoBo 1500 hp\1100kw DieselElectric locomotives, built 1949Feb~1953Dec by ElectroMotive in USIL.La Grange & Canada Ontario.London; this model was the 4th & the most popular version of the 1946~1960 EMD.F2~F3~F5~F7~F9 model series; some 2366 F7A Cab Units & 1483 F7B Booster Units were built.
Initially marketed for freight duty, F units also serviced famous passenger trains, such as the ATSF Super Chief & El Capitan; with their sleek cowl bodies & matching coaching stock, these locomotives became known as streamliners.
The F7 differed from preceding F2\F3\F5s primarily in internal mechanical\electrical equipment & some external features. Its continuous tractive effort rating was 20% higher at 40kLbTE\18000kgTE to 65MpHr\105KpHr, compared to 32.5KLbTE\14700kgTE for F3s with like gearing.
Many F units remained in service for decades, as railroads found them economical & reliable, though they were not popular amongst yard crews, being difficult to mount\dismount & near impossible for engineers to see hand signals from trainmen on the ground without leaning out the window; these looks appeared before most railways had handheld radios. In their later years, road switchers such as the EMD GP7 replaced F units in yard duties, & they were primarily assigned to Thru\Unit trains where little or no switching was required.
