The F40PH-4C is a (currently) in production series of several remanufactured EMD F40PH locomotives, which are being remanufactured by Rolling Stock Solutions.
Features[]
The Rolling Stock Solutions remanufactured F40PH-4C features a remanufactured Tier 0+ EMD 645E3B prime mover and a separate Tier 4 HEP generator. Together, the remanufactured prime mover and separate Tier 4 HEP generator help reduce the emissions of these remanufactured locomotives. Additionally, the F40PH-4C features microprocessor controls and installed PTC (Positive Train Control).
History[]
In late 2022-early 2023, Rolling Stock Solutions was established in Boston, Massachusetts. Rolling Stock Solutions is a company intended to provide ready-to-use Tier 4-compliant remanufactured older diesel locomotives for passenger railroads who cannot afford newer Tier 2 (e.g. MPI MPXpress), Tier 3, (e.g. Bombardier ALP-45DP), or Tier 4 (e.g. Siemens Charger) for their motive power. The locomotive that was chosen for remanufacturing was the EMD F40PH. In 2023-2024, the F40PH-4C was constructed in the Rolling Stock Solutions factory. On October 14, 2024, it was unveiled at Boston South Station, with the MBTA logo alongside the Rolling Stock Solutions logo in a plain grey paint scheme.
Trivia[]
- Railfans believed that other manufacturers such as Alstom or Siemens would produce this locomotive, but in actuality, it was remanufactured by Rolling Stock Solutions.
- Though this remanufactured locomotive is planned to be used on commuter rails, it possibly (though not confirmed) could go to intercity operators like Amtrak for use on the Pacific Surfliner route due to their Siemens SC-44 Charger units failing constantly (potentially becoming unreliable) beginning in the later half of 2024.
