The DE30AC & DM30AC are Passenger locomotives designed & built 1997~1998 by ElectroMotive & Siemens, specifically for the Long Island Rail Road. The Diesel-Electric DE30ACs were numbered LIRR#400~423, the Dual-Mode DM30ACs were numbered LIRR#500~522, & were assigned to PushPull trains with 2~7 Kawaski.C3 BiLevel passenger cars.
Both submodels may run on LIRR non3rdRailLineElectric\non3RLE branches; the DM30ACs have the ability to draw 3RLE power via retractable pickups on their BogieTrucks, switching from Diesel to 3RLE mode as needed, typically thru tunnels serving Penn Station in Manhattan from points east. DE30ACs serve LIRRs non3RLE branches: Port Jefferson~Huntington, Ronkonkoma~Greenport... DM30ACs & DE30ACs are not normally used on LIRRs Hempstead, West Hempstead, Long Beach, Far Rockaway & Port Washington branches.
