Plans for the Design[]
The Electro-Motive Division (EMD) DDR 6700 Horsepower Electric Locomotive is an electric locomotive proposal that was proposed and planned by EMD for Conrail. It was going to have Quadra Axles (Or a D-D wheel arrangement) much like the EMD DD35s and the EMD DDA40Xs, based on the dimensions there would have been a good reason for it, it would have been very large, very long and very powerful because it had a generation of 6700 Horsepower (or 4996.18914 kilowatts), sources are pretty scant as to exactly what this electric locomotive was for, but it was a proposal that was planned for Conrail who must have been in the market for an electric locomotive and for an electric locomotive that would have been very powerful.
Why wasn't it Built[]
Even though it would be ridiculously expensive, its probably assumed that Conrail didn't have that much electrification on their lines which was a reason why the project fell flat, Conrail did have electrification on their lines but not as much money/funds to warrant a 6700 Horsepower electric locomotive, unless if they were gonna electrify the vast majority of their network which would have cost even more money, which can be another reason why it was never built at all. It would have been nice to see it built, only if Conrail had the money/funds to afford/warrant it, but sadly, it wasn't built at all.
Trivia[]
- A Website called "Conrail Archives" shows a page of where The EMD DDR 6700 HP Electric Locomotive was first found out from as it's plans/blueprints were found in a booklet, what it would be using and what it was mainly for: https://crhscollection.omeka.net/items/show/16117
