The E751 series is a Japanese limited express electric multiple unit operated by the East Japan Railway Company since March 2000.
History[]
The E751 series was designed in 1999 to replace aging 485 cars in use on the Hatsukari service. Three six-car sets were built, all by Tokyu Car Corporation (now known as J-TREC). The first sets entered service on 11 March 2000 with the introduction of the revised timetable on the Hatsukari service; the Hatsukari service was discontinued on 30 November 2002, and all three sets were reassigned to the newly reintroduced Tsugaru services introduced just the next day.
Slight refurbishments happened in 2006 to help strengthen underfloor equipment and to reinforce the front end snowplows. All three sets were taken out of service on 4 December 2010 with the introduction of the revised timetable and temporarily replaced with three four-car 485-3000 series sets. All three E751 series sets returned to service on 23 April 2011, this time as four-car sets; the pair of cars removed from all three sets were then placed into storage and would be reinserted into the sets during busy periods until all three pairs of cars were withdrawn and scrapped in November 2015.
All sets are in service and are based at Aomori Depot.
Design[]
The E751 series sets are based on the E653 series sets, so their basic design carries over. The E751 series, unlike the E653 series, is an AC only electric multiple unit, as opposed to the dual-voltage capabilities of the E653 series sets. The E751 series sets are also designed to cope with the cold weather environments of the northern parts of Japan.
Specifications[]
Construction is of an aluminum alloy. End cars are 21 meters long while intermediate cars are 20.5 meters long. Traction motors use insulated gate bipolar transistors manufactured by Hitachi which have a distinctive, high-pitched cadence.
The E751 series is equipped with a later version of a musical horn that is standard on most of JR East's Limited Express fleet. The musical horn is usually blasted when a set is about to depart, with a hatch on the skirting opening when the horn is blasted.
